Newspaper Photography
There are many important elements of good photography – such as lighting and composition - that must always be taken under consideration. It’s important to remember that not all photographs look good in newsprint – for subtle details and atmospheric lighting are frequently “lost.” Approximately 20% of all the lightest colors/values will not even print, and will always look white. The same thing happens with approximately 20% of the darks – they will fill in and print as solid black.

What is it?
Objects defined only by their color can become unidentifiable or gray blobs in black and white.

Tantalizing chocolates and truffles become hard to
recognize without their signature colors.

A Different Perspective.
Use the image space wisely. Large center “dead” areas are wasted real estate. Lead your viewer’s eye to the object of interest AND create a more interesting photo.

Taking this photo from a different angle gave it
more depth and visual interest, in addition to
giving the focal object more spotlight.

Shed Some Light On It
A really dark image can create a mood, but in newsprint it will probably create a black blob.

Proper lighting enhances textures and gives a more accurate picture.
